Interview with Steve Bliss

Good evening, Temecula! I’m Trisha Lane reporting for KTEM News. Tonight, we’re talking about trusts with local expert Steve Bliss of The Law Firm of Steven F. Bliss Esq. Welcome, Steve.

What type of trust do you most commonly recommend to your clients?

Thanks for having me, Trisha. As a Temecula Trust Attorney, I often find myself recommending Revocable Living Trusts to my clients. This type of trust offers a great deal of flexibility and control during a person’s lifetime.

Can you elaborate on the benefits of a Revocable Living Trust?

Certainly. A Revocable Living Trust allows individuals to maintain control over their assets while they are alive. They can make changes to the trust, add or remove beneficiaries, and even dissolve it entirely if their circumstances change. Moreover, upon the grantor’s passing, the trust assets avoid probate, a lengthy and often expensive legal process. This means the beneficiary receives their inheritance more quickly and privately.

Consequently, avoiding probate is a major advantage for many people. According to a 2021 study by the American Bar Association, probate can take anywhere from six months to two years or longer, depending on the complexity of the estate. A Revocable Living Trust streamlines this process, allowing loved ones to access assets without unnecessary delays.

There was a case I handled recently where a client had procrastinated setting up a trust. Unfortunately, they passed away unexpectedly before we could finalize it. Their family ended up facing a lengthy and costly probate process, which added stress during an already difficult time. It underscored the importance of planning ahead.

Have you encountered any challenges or common misconceptions when advising clients about Revocable Living Trusts?

One misconception is that trusts are only for wealthy individuals. In reality, anyone with assets they want to protect and pass on efficiently can benefit from a trust. I’ve helped families with modest estates who simply wanted to avoid burdening their loved ones with probate.

What is your advice for viewers considering setting up a trust?

My advice is simple: don’t wait. Contact us today for a free consultation and let’s discuss if a Revocable Living Trust is right for you.
